About Independent Indiana

Independent Indiana was launched to build on growing momentum for change.

Independent Indiana executive director Nathan Gotsch

It was formed to break down the barriers that keep independents from competing — like burdensome signature requirements and straight-ticket voting — and to give communities the knowledge and tools to identify and support leaders who answer to voters, not parties.

This effort is proudly nonpartisan and led by executive director Nathan Gotsch, himself a former independent candidate for Congress in Northeast Indiana in 2022.

We are advised by current and former elected Republicans, Democrats, and Independents from across Indiana who share a simple belief:

Competitive elections lead to better leaders and a stronger state.

The Center for Independent and Effective Government

Independent Indiana is a project of the Center for Independent and Effective Government, a nonpartisan 501(c)(4) nonprofit organization dedicated to strengthening democracy.

It provides research, education, and resources to help communities understand the challenges facing independent candidates, encourages broader civic participation, and promotes fairer, more competitive elections that put voters first.
