TOM SAUNDERS

A Former Republican Finding Success as an Independent

For decades, Tom Saunders was a fixture in Indiana Republican politics.

The Henry County native served 13 terms as a state representative in the General Assembly, helping bring jobs, infrastructure, and an Ivy Tech campus to his district.

He was respected across the aisle for his independence, often voting against his caucus when he felt it was right for his community.

But like many longtime Republicans, Saunders grew disillusioned with the party’s direction.

In 2022, he retired from the legislature. The next year, he returned to public life — this time not as a Republican, but as an independent member of the Lewisville Town Council.

Saunders’ story is part of a broader shift in Indiana. Across the state, more former Republicans are questioning whether their party still represents their values. Some, like Saunders, have chosen to continue their public service as independents.

His career is a reminder that Indiana voters care less about party labels than about honesty, experience, and community leadership.
