Throughout Indiana, candidates have been bypassing the two-party system in surprising numbers.In the past two elections, 244 independent candidates got on the ballot in partisan races.52% of them won.

<h4>When people say independents can’t make an impact in Indiana, Shawna Girgis proves otherwise.</h4>In 2007, Girgis was asked to run for mayor of Bedford, a conservative stronghold in southern Indiana. At the time, she was leading the Indiana Rural Health Association, raising three children—including a six-month-old—and grieving the recent loss of her mother.Running for office seemed impossible. But with encouragement from community leaders, she decided to try.Girgis gathered signatures, built a grassroots campaign, and was elected as an independent. She went on to serve three terms as mayor of Bedford, consistently earning broad support in a county where Democrats had all but disappeared from local government.Her leadership focused on what mattered most to residents: revitalizing downtown, improving infrastructure, and creating a business-friendly environment. By avoiding partisan battles and emphasizing practical solutions, Girgis earned trust from Republicans, Democrats, and independents alike.Today, her story offers a powerful reminder: independent leaders can succeed by putting service first.

<h4>For decades, Tom Saunders was a fixture in Indiana Republican politics.</h4>The Henry County native served 13 terms as a state representative in the General Assembly, helping bring jobs, infrastructure, and an Ivy Tech campus to his district.He was respected across the aisle for his independence, often voting against his caucus when he felt it was right for his community.But like many longtime Republicans, Saunders grew disillusioned with the party’s direction.In 2022, he retired from the legislature. The next year, he returned to public life — this time not as a Republican, but as an independent member of the Lewisville Town Council.Saunders’ story is part of a broader shift in Indiana. <h4>Huntington, Indiana, may be best known as the hometown of former Vice President Dan Quayle—and for its strong Republican lean.</h4>Yet in 2019, something unexpected happened. Richard Strick, then a Republican city councilman, broke with his party and ran for mayor as an independent. Voters chose him to lead their city, and four years later they reaffirmed that choice by reelecting him to a second term.In one of the most Republican corners of Indiana, Strick has built trust by putting local issues ahead of partisan battles. A new statewide campaign about Hoosiers frustrated with the two major parties

TO: Interested Parties FROM: Whit Ayres and Dan Judy DATE: October 9, 2025 RE: Findings from Survey of Indiana Registered Voters Our firm conducted a survey of registered voters in Indiana regarding electoral process in the state. Key findings from the survey include: 1. A majority opposes the current redistricting proposal. Asked “As you may know, the state legislature redraws the state’s Congressional Districts every ten years after the U.S. Census. There is currently a proposal to redraw the districts after just five years, which would make Indiana’s two House districts held by Democrats more likely to be won by Republicans next year. Do you support or oppose the proposal to redraw Indiana’s Congressional Districts?” voters oppose the idea by a 53 to 34 percent margin.2. Two-thirds of voters believe that the current signature requirement for independent candidates in Indiana is unfair. Asked “In order to get on the ballot in Indiana to run for U.S. Congress, independent candidates must collect around 4,000 signatures, while Republicans and Democratic candidates for U.S. Congress do not have to collect any signatures to get on the ballot. Do you think it is fair or unfair to require independent candidates to collect so many more signatures to run for office?” voters say that it is unfair by a 67 to 25 percent margin, including 56 to 34 percent among Republicans, 76 to 20 percent among independents, and 71 to 27 percent among Democrats. 3. Voters say that straight-ticket voting is a bad thing by more than two-to-one. Asked “As you may know, Indiana allows straight-ticket voting, where a voter can automatically vote for all of a party’s candidates on one ballot, but without seeing the names of any independent candidates running. Do you think that straight-ticket voting is a good thing because it makes it easier for voters to vote for their preferred party’s candidates, or straight-ticket voting is a bad thing because it makes it harder for independent candidates to be successful?” voters say that it is a bad thing by a 62 to 26 percent margin, including 49 to 36 among Republicans, 72 to 19 percent among independents, and 62 to 30 percent among Democrats. Methodology This survey of 604 registered voters, with a Margin of Error of ±3.99 percent, was conducted October 4-7, 2025. Respondents were drawn from a list of registered voters provided by i360, with 7% reached by a live interviewer on a landline, 64% reached by a live interviewer on a cell phone, and 29% reached by text-to-web on a cell phone. Calling quotas were set by county, gender, race, age, and education level to reflect current voter registration in Indiana.

A new survey of Indiana voters finds broad concern with current election rules—majorities oppose mid-decade redistricting, view the signature burden on independents as unfair, and see straight-ticket voting as harmful. The memo from Whit Ayres and Dan Judy summarizes these sentiments from a statewide sample conducted in early October 2025.

Election Reform Findings

By Nathan GotschLast month, Independent Indiana, the nonprofit I lead, commissioned a statewide poll of registered voters. Among other things, we found that 41% of Hoosiers now identify as independents—compared to just 29% as Republicans and 21% as Democrats.That helps explain why 52% of independent candidates on the ballot won their elections in 2023 and 2024, compared with 61% of Republicans and 35% of Democrats.So why haven’t we sent a single independent to represent us in Washington or the Indiana Statehouse?It’s simple: As the size of the race increases, the rules unique to independent candidates become nearly impossible to overcome.I learned that firsthand when I ran for Congress as an independent in 2022.Under Indiana law, I had to collect handwritten signatures from registered voters—each providing their address and date of birth that matched their voter registration—to appear on the ballot. The number required is 2% of the number of votes cast in that district in the most recent secretary of state election. The Indiana Election Division told us that meant 6,738 valid signatures—slightly more than the requirement for Republican and Democratic candidates for Congress in Indiana, which is zero.Because about a third of signatures are typically thrown out due to errors or mismatches, we actually needed nearly 9,000 in total. That required hiring a professional firm, and I was fortunate to find a reputable one willing to take on the project—at a cost of $77,139.30, which was nearly my entire life savings.A week before the deadline to turn in our signatures, we double-checked the required number with the Election Division. That’s when they realized the initial figure they’d given us was wrong. The true threshold for my district was only 4,598—meaning I’d just paid roughly $25,000 for signatures I didn’t need.That same year, a federal lawsuit challenged Indiana’s signature requirements for independents and minor party candidates as unconstitutionally burdensome. The plaintiffs pointed out that an independent candidate for statewide office must collect 36,944 signatures—an effort that, at current market rates, would cost around $750,000.During that case, the truth came out about why the requirement is so high. In a sworn affidavit, former Republican legislator Mitch Harper revealed that the number had been quadrupled in 1980 in a bill written by Democratic Rep. Richard Bell, who was angry that his friend, Michigan City Mayor Cliff Arnold, had been unsuccessfully challenged by an independent candidate the previous year.“At the time, Indiana’s ballot access requirements for independent and minor-party candidates for statewide, congressional, and legislative offices were already onerous,” Harper wrote. “[The legislation] was never intended as anything more than political score-settling in LaPorte County.”Despite that, federal Judge James Sweeney ultimately ruled that the law was constitutional. More than four decades later, Indiana voters are still paying the price for Bell’s petty quest for revenge.The Indiana General Assembly could easily fix this by voting to reduce or even eliminate those requirements, which 67% of Hoosier voters—including 56% of Republicans—in our poll say are unfair.With numbers like that—and the fact that Indiana’s current congressional delegation of seven Republicans and two Democrats clearly doesn’t reflect the 41% independent, 29% Republican and 21% Democratic makeup of Hoosier voters—one could argue that the Legislature should rectify this situation as soon as possible.Perhaps the governor could even call a special session to do so.

Independent Indiana announces Nathan Gotsch as executive director

I’ve frequently posted about the multiple negative effects of Indiana’s extreme gerrymandering. One of the most pernicious of those effects has been voter suppression–the tendency of Democrats and Independents who live in “safe” Republican districts to stay home on election day. If you think the result is foreordained, why bother?In Indiana, the Democrats’ decision not to bother running candidates in many of those “safe” districts has only increased that disengagement. When there is no competition, we shouldn’t be surprised when there is minimal turnout. And Indiana has long had depressingly low voter turnout–last time I looked, we were near the bottom of all states.This situation has produced a depressingly widespread opinion that progressive candidates (even moderately progressive, as in not committed crazies or Christian Nationalists) have no chance in Indiana. Donors who support Democrats send their dollars elsewhere; discouraged Democrats don’t bother casting ballots.&nbsp; (Worse still, in many rural districts, many faithful longtime Republican voters who are unhappy with incumbent officials nevertheless cannot bring themselves to vote for a Democrat.)A new organization has decided that the basic problem in the Hoosier State is that lack of competition.&nbsp;The folks who have organized Independent Indiana looked at the data, and discovered that during the last couple of election cycles, over 200 candidates had run for offices in Indiana as Independents. Of that number, 52% won their races,&nbsp;an astonishing percentage. (In contrast, Democrats won 36% of theirs…)The goal of Independent Indiana is to encourage and support Independent candidates–and to give voters in those gerrymandered districts a choice.&nbsp;The organization recently held an informational meeting, and I attended. After introductory remarks from Nathan Gotsch, the Executive Director, and the introduction of board members and a recent operations hire, Nathan introduced a panel consisting of three mayors who had won their elections as Independents. Their comments were enlightening.&nbsp;Tom Saunders had formerly been a Republican state representative; he is now an independent on the Lewisville Town Council. As he explained, “I felt like my party was leaving me, and I wasn’t happy…Toward the end, my conscience wasn’t agreeing with me. I wasn’t sleeping at night, and it was time to come home.” (Many former Republicans can underscore his discomfort…) As he said, “I think I could have run as an independent and gotten elected to the legislature, but my advisors and the people who gave me money said no.”&nbsp;Saunders ran for his city council and won. He also had some harsh words for Republicans who are proposing a mid-cycle gerrymander.“The worst thing that’s happened to the state is the supermajority where we don’t hear the other side’s concerns.”“If redistricting happens, I think it does open it up [for independents]. If I was 20 years younger, I would [run for a larger office as an independent. My wife might divorce me, but I would.”“Republicans need to go back 30 years and look what happened the last time they tried this. Democrats walked out, the plan backfired, and Republicans lost seats. I think it’s a mistake.”Richard Strick, another panelist, is an Independent who has been mayor of the Republican stronghold of Huntington since 2020. As he told the gathering, “We don’t just need independent candidates. We need independent thinking in both parties — left and right officials who know when to put party aside to do what’s needed. At the end of the day, especially at the local level, it’s about delivering and getting results. People will give you a chance if they think you’re sincere and have their best interest at heart.” He enumerated the benefits of independence, noting “you don’t have to be married to an ideology. I’m 100% responsible for what I say and do.” The third panelist was Shawna Girgis, who served as the Independent mayor of Bedford from 2008 to 2019. She pointed out that the first time she’d run, Republicans quietly told her they were glad she was in the race. “By my second and third campaigns, people were open about supporting me because they saw the results.” She also noted that running against extremists and ideologues can be a bonus: “Sometimes having people work against you is the best thing that can happen. They’re the wrong people with the wrong message, doing the wrong things consistently. Even people in the dominant party feel unrepresented.&nbsp;That sure describes Indiana, where polls reflect that even most Republican voters are unhappy with the Christian Nationalists and culture warriors who currently dominate our government.

An Intriguing New Non-Party

Based on data from L2, a trusted nonpartisan provider, nearly 44% of registered voters in Indiana are independents — compared to about 31% who are Republicans and 25% who are Democrats. (Because Indiana does not register voters by party, these figures are estimated based on recent partisan primary participation and supplemented with modeling analytics.)These victories came despite independents in Indiana facing some of the highest barriers in the country. To get on the ballot, candidates must collect petition signatures from registered voters equal to 2% of the most recent Secretary of State vote in their district. For a statewide race, that means nearly 37,000 signatures — closer to 50,000 in practice once rejections are factored in. With paid circulators charging at least $15 per valid signature, ballot access for a statewide independent candidate can cost more than $700,000.“These successful independents prove that voters will cross party lines when given the choice,” Gotsch said. “Independent Indiana exists to shine a spotlight on that success, develop educational resources for prospective candidates, and study what reforms are needed so independents can compete at every level of government.”The initiative’s launch includes a statewide billboard campaign in Indianapolis, Fort Wayne, Evansville, and Northwest Indiana — and two September events:<ul><li>Independent Leadership in Indiana Monday, September 22 at 7 PM ET, Tinker House Events (Indianapolis). There is a new group whose mission is to promote Independent candidate visibility and likeness in the state of Indiana.Independent Indiana was formed to break down the barriers that keep independents from competing in elections, such as burdensome signature requirements and straight-ticket voting.In 2022, Nathan Gotsch, the executive director for Independent Indiana, ran for Congress as an independent in Indiana’s 3rd Congressional District. INDIANAPOLIS — An initiative aimed at promoting independent candidates in Indiana released a new study on Monday, one that the organization hopes to help Indiana out of a period of what they call “sustained political stagnation.”Within Independent Indiana’s recent study on competitive elections, the group calls for the elimination of straight-ticket voting, along with changes to the signature requirement for independent candidates in the state of Indiana.This comes after Independent Indiana released a series of polls earlier this year, including one centered around the state’s redistricting effort as well as another surrounding whether or not Indiana is on the right track politically.Within the study, the group aimed to answer questions surrounding the competitive nature of elections in the state, many of which the group claims is decided before the general election through partisan primaries, party caucuses or districts designed to be held by one party.“The result is a negative cycle: fewer competitive races, weaker accountability, policy incentives skewed toward the most ideological voters and declining public engagement,” the executive summary of the study read.The study aims to look at what could be learned from the independent candidates who have won in Indiana, and what reforms and investments are likely to restore competition and accountability in elections.“Indiana’s democracy will not be renewed through a single reform or a single election cycle,” the study’s executive summary read. “But this study’s findings point to a clear opportunity: Hoosiers want fairer elections, more choices and leaders who are accountable to voters rather than party machinery.”The recommendations that the organization offered in the study include:<ul><li>Repeal straight-ticket voting</li><li>Returning the signature requirement threshold for independent candidates to 0.5%, the figure it was at before the state’s 1980 legislative session</li><li>Build durable campaign infrastructure for independent candidates, including training, toolkits and membership networks.</li></ul>“We launched this study because we wanted to understand what’s really happening across our state—how big the problem is, what’s driving it, and where we might find hope,” said Nathan Gotsch, executive director of Independent Indiana. “We gathered data, interviewed experts, and listened to people from every corner of Indiana and every part of the political spectrum. Leaders of an Indiana group aimed at supporting independent political candidates say the state’s time in the national congressional redistricting spotlight gives them hope that the Legislature will advance election reforms.On top of Independent Indiana’s list is eliminating straight-ticket voting in which those casting election ballots can vote for all of a party’s candidate with a single push of a button.Independent Indiana organizers, who <a href="https://indianacapitalchronicle.com/briefs/indiana-initiative-supporting-independent-candidates-launches/">launched the group this fall</a>, released Monday a <a href="https://independentindiana.nationbuilder.com/report_download" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">report on the competitiveness of the state’s elections</a>. They said straight-ticket voting is among the greatest obstacles independent candidates face since voters don’t even see the names of those candidates.A poll conducted for the study found that 62% of voters considered straight-ticket voting a “bad thing,” with 26% in support. The highest level of support was from among Republicans, but they were 36% in favor and 49% against the practice.Nathan Gotsch, executive director of Independent Indiana, said the secretary of state’s office does not track how many straight-ticket votes are cast statewide.“But we went through and looked at the top five largest counties in the state and over 50% of voters in the last election in those counties voted straight ticket,” Gotsch said.<h4>Call to eliminate straight-ticket voting</h4>Bills to eliminate straight-ticket voting have been introduced numerous times in the Legislature over the past decade without winning passage.Such issues have been dismissed in the past as ones of little interest to the public. But that was also the view about a topic like congressional redistricting before the monthslong debate ended with its defeat by the state Senate last week, said Jay Chaudhary, a board member of the nonprofit Center for Independent and Effective Government, which is Independent Indiana’s parent organization.“Nobody cares about redistricting, right? But we saw the absolute fire storm and really the power of the people in beating that back,” said Chaudhary, who was director of the state’s Division of Mental Health and Addiction under Republican Gov. Eric Holcomb.Indiana is one of only six states that currently allows straight-ticket voting, according to the group.Gotsch said a new factor in the straight-ticket voting discussion will be the impact of school board candidates being allowed to list their political party affiliation starting with the 2026 elections. The <a href="https://indianacapitalchronicle.com/2025/04/24/partisan-school-board-bill-narrowly-avoids-tied-vote-goes-to-governor/">partisan school board bill adopted earlier this year</a>, however, does not allow straight-ticket votes to count in those races.“I actually think in a lot of Republican areas, you could find Republican school board members losing because of that under vote,” Gotsch said. “So many people are going in, voting straight ticket and then those Republican school board members are not benefiting from those votes.”The group is also advocating for a lowering of the signature threshold independent candidates must meet in order to qualify for the election ballot.Those candidates must now collect petition signatures from registered voters equal to 2% of the most recent secretary of state vote in their district. For a statewide race, that means nearly 37,000 signatures.Gotsch, who was an independent candidate in 2022 for northeastern Indiana’s 3rd congressional district seat, said that the 2% requirement was enacted in 1980 and creates a barrier for those wanting to run as independents.<h4>Poll finds many voters dissatisfied</h4>Independent Indiana’s report also blames gerrymandering for what it said resulted “in a small, unrepresentative slice of voters effectively determining who ultimately holds most elected offices.”The report cited the 2024 primaries, in which 17% of Indiana registered voters cast ballots — an estimated 13% in the Republican primary and 4% in the Democratic primary.The report’s poll found that 53% of overall Indiana voters were dissatisfied with their election choices, with 40% satisfied. Republican voters, however, were satisfied with their choices by a 68%-26% margin.For political party identification, the poll found:<ul><li>29% of voters considering themselves Republicans</li><li>&nbsp;15% saying they were independents who leaned Republican</li><li>21% said they were Democrats</li><li>11% independents who leaned Democratic</li><li>15% independents</li><li>8% declined to answer</li></ul>Regarding the state’s major parties:<ul><li>33% had favorable opinion of the Indiana Republican Party, with 45% unfavorable</li><li>25% had favorable opinion of the Indiana Democratic Party, with 43% unfavorable&nbsp;&nbsp;</li></ul>The poll, conducted by North Star Opinion Research, was taken of 604 registered voters in early October with a margin of error of 3.99%. North Star regularly polls for GOP candidates and national Republican committees.

The leader of a new organization focused on independent candidates said voters need to know they have options besides the Republican and Democratic parties.Nathan Gotsch is the executive director of the nonprofit <a href="https://www.independentindiana.org/">Independent Indiana</a>. Gotsch, who ran for Congress in 2022 as an independent candidate, said voter registration data consistently shows independents are the largest bloc. Data compiled by the Independent Voter Project shows 44% of Indiana voters are registered independents, while 31% are registered Republicans and 25% are registered Democrats. He said he got the idea for starting Independent Indiana after looking at that data and talking to independents who have been elected to public office. Notably, Huntington Mayor Richard Strick, a former Republican, won his seat as an independent in 2019, and was reelected in 2023.“I think the stereotype in the past has been that independents are these wacky people who couldn’t run as Republicans or Democrats,” Gotsch said. “A lot of these folks have been major party nominees in the past. We’re seeing more and more of these people who just want to serve their communities and have the freedom to represent their constituents in a way that they think is best without having them having to worry about what the parties might want them to say or do.”Gotsch said Independent Indiana will push for changes to Indiana election laws to make it easier for independents to get on the ballot. The organization also is compiling a toolkit to help independent candidates get on the ballot. He said the organization is still reviewing what it can and can’t do based on its nonprofit status, but it could consider endorsing candidates if nonprofit rules allow.Gotsch said his donors are anonymous, but come from across the political spectrum. He said supporters include some past statewide elected officials, though he declined to offer specifics.A majority of American voters <a href="https://news.gallup.com/poll/651278/support-third-political-party-dips.aspx">consistently say in polls they want a third option</a> in elections, but those same voters rarely take a third option when it’s presented to them. Pew Research last year reviewed polling and election results for independent and third-party presidential candidates, such as Gary Johnson in 2016, and Ross Perot in 1992 and 1996. They found <a href="https://www.pewresearch.org/short-reads/2024/06/27/third-party-and-independent-candidates-for-president-often-fall-short-of-early-polling-numbers/">support slipped closer to the election and final results consistently underperformed poll projections</a>. Gotsch said he blames ballot access laws, which keep independent candidates off the ballot and prevent them from concentrating on running their campaigns. Under state law, independent and minor-party candidates must collect signatures totaling at least 2% of the total votes cast in the most recent election for secretary of state in the district the candidate wishes to represent. But that’s exactly what I experienced earlier this year.Before our conversation, I’d been combing through the 2023 and 2024 Indiana election results, searching for anything that might suggest a path to restoring competitive general elections in our state. As I scrolled through the data, something caught my eye: A surprising number of independent candidates had run for partisan office in Indiana the past two years.That caught my attention because, unlike most people, I knew how challenging it was to run as an independent here. I’d done so myself, running for Congress in northeast Indiana in 2022, when I learned firsthand the structural barriers independents face.Chief among them is a burdensome signature requirement to get on the ballot, which gets worse as the size of the office increases. In my case, I had to collect nearly 5,000 signatures from registered voters in my district (IN-3); the Republican and Democratic candidates didn’t need&nbsp;any. (An independent run for statewide office requires 36,943 signatures.)Aware that my electoral history as an independent might be causing me to read too much into the numbers, I reached out to that former Republican state chair to see how many independents running across the state in 2023 and 2024 would signal something important to him.“Well, if it was 50, that would be surprising,” he told me.“It’s&nbsp;244,” I said.He paused. “Wow. OK. How many of them won?”It was the right question. As I’d discovered myself, there’s a big difference between getting on the ballot and getting elected, especially because Indiana is one of six states that still has straight-ticket voting. The year I ran, 48% of voters in Allen County—where half the district’s population resides—voted straight ticket and didn’t even see my name on the ballot.“What percentage of those 244 independents do&nbsp;you&nbsp;think won?” I asked him.His guess: 5%.“It was&nbsp;52%,” I replied.The shock on his face confirmed my initial impression: This was a big deal.What makes these results even more striking is that so few people know about them, given that independents have no statewide communications team to package their wins and share them with the public.And those structural barriers I mentioned—and lack of institutional support—have relegated their wins to the lower half of the ballot: mayors, city and town council members, and clerk-treasurers. Important offices, to be sure, just not the kind that typically make headlines.But independents have been running for countywide, state legislative and congressional seats, too. And despite losing, many have been coming closer than you’d expect. Of those who lost in 2023 and 2024, nearly a third garnered at least 30% of the vote. That’s far above spoiler territory and suggests they might’ve won with a little help.To provide it, a group of Hoosiers and I have launched a new project called Independent Indiana. Our mission is to make sure people across the state know that running for office as an independent is more viable than they think. Independent Indiana is building on the momentum of its launch last week with a new statewide television ad campaign showcasing what it looks like when communities elect independent leaders. “The response to our launch was even better than we anticipated,” said Independent Indiana executive director Nathan Gotsch. “It's clear that Hoosier voters across the state are looking for something different than the status quo, and we're excited for even more of them to learn about the benefits of voting for independent candidates through this new ad.”The 30-second spot, which will begin airing next week, features residents in Huntington reflecting on their experiences under independent Mayor Richard Strick, who is currently in his second term leading the city.“I just don’t feel like we fit into either political party,” says one woman featured in the ad.&nbsp;“It was a really empowering experience to vote for an independent in my community,” notes another. “Independent leaders are authentic to who they are.”The commercial can be viewed at <a href="http://independentindiana.org/ad">independentindiana.org/ad</a>.The campaign marks the latest push by Independent Indiana, a nonprofit initiative launched last week with the goal of spotlighting the growing number of nonpartisan candidates across the state. According to figures released at the launch, 244 independent candidates qualified for partisan races in 2023 and 2024, with 52 percent winning their contests. Nearly a third of those who lost still captured between 30 and 49 percent of the vote.In addition to the television buy, Independent Indiana is introducing new billboards this week in Indianapolis, Fort Wayne, Evansville and Merrillville. One features Strick, while another highlights former Bedford mayor Shawna Girgis, who served three terms as an independent beginning in 2008.The effort comes as research shows Indiana voters are increasingly unaffiliated with either major party. An analysis by the Independent Voter Project found that nearly 44 percent of Hoosiers are independents, compared with about 31 percent Republican and 25 percent Democratic.Gotsch said the organization sees the ads as a way to broaden awareness. “We want every Hoosier voter to know that independent candidates are already succeeding around the state, despite the structural barriers preventing them from competing on a level playing field with Republicans and Democrats,” he said.The group is also organizing two upcoming events. On Sept. 18, it will host a virtual conversation with former Forward Party national organizing director Will Conway and ballot access expert Christopher Thrasher.&nbsp;Four days later, on Sept. 22, Strick and Girgis will join former state representative Tom Saunders—now an independent town council member in Lewisville—for a panel discussion at Tinker House in Indianapolis.
